Massachusetts-Longfellow Bridge Tower

Massachusetts-Longfellow Bridge Tower. The bridge crosses over the Charles River connecting the Beacon Hill area in Boston to the Kendall Square area in Cambridge. The bridge is nearly one half of a mile long, and 105 feet wide. It serves as a railway, highway bridge with a pedestrian walkway. The bridge has arched steel spans supported on 10 masonry piers. On the large central pier are four tower structures depicting the bow of Vikings ships which represent the voyage of Leif Eriksson’s travel on the Charles River around 1000AD. The city seals of Boston and Cambridge also adorn the towers. This is an image of one those ornamental towers.
