Description

STAND ALONE YELLOW BIRCH was spotted while driving through Acadia National Park, in Maine. My obsessions with trees forced my husband to stop the car so I could take some shots of this tree. The yellow birch is a common tree to the area, which has a peeling golden bark. It is found to grow in woodlands and cool ravines. If a young tree twig is crushed, it will emit a wintergreen smell. The sap of the yellow birch can be extracted from the tree similar to maple syrup of the maple tree. Its resinous wood was sought after by the colonial ship builders due to the woods resistance to rotting in water. Today the wood is sought after for housing and furniture due to it being light in color(stains easily) and strong.
